What happens when a native of Bologna, Italy, moves to foreign lands? He gets homesick for the real taste of Italian food and wine. After years spent in America and now the Netherlands, Giovanni Chiarini, owner of Vino Veritas, decided to share his passion for the culinary riches of his home country.
The region of Italy known as Emilia-Romagna is called the food capital of Italy, and it is from this region that so many of the Italian classics known throughout the world first originated. Lasagne, ravioli, Bolognese sauce (ragú) … these are just a few of the famous dishes from this region. Bologna is part of this region, so Giovanni grew up with a rich culinary tradition and exceptional ingredients, including mortadella, prosciutto di Parma, and parmeggiano reggiano, to name just a few.
As well as growing up amid the great food of his region and country, Giovanni also learned about Italian wine from a young age. He often accompanied his father on trips to vineyards, wine makers, and even wine expos, learning about the history and process of making wine, and coming to understand the exceptional aspects of different regions. This time spent learning from his father gave root to his love of wine.
Even after moving to America, working in IT, he found himself eventually working for a wine seller, further expanding his understanding of wine, and cementing his passion for his own country’s exceptional wines.
Still, it wasn’t until moving to the Netherlands that he eventually decided to open his own Italian wine bar/restaurant. Wanting to share his love and passion, he opened Vino Veritas (from the Latin in vino veritas, meaning “out of wine comes truth”) in June 2014.
The main focus is to offer a hand-picked selection that best represents the country as a whole, and the ingredients specifically. The wines provide a sampling from the north, central, and southern sections of the country. The food is made by small manufacturers, often in small batches or hand made, with the best ingredients, traditional practices, and no preservatives. Everything sold at Vino Veritas is imported directly from Italy, by Vino Veritas, working with our own suppliers, even the bread!
